Bio-Rad and Cell Signaling Technology sign research, supply and co-marketing agreement

Beverly, MA and Hercules, CA – August 26, 2003 – Cell Signaling Technology, Inc (CST) of Beverly, MA announces today that it has entered into a supply and comarketing agreement with Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. (AMEX: BIO and BIO.B). Under this exclusive collaboration, CST will develop and validate antibodies that Bio-Rad will use in the development of multiplex bead-based assays for the Bio-Plex™ suspension array system. These assays will enable the simultaneous assessment of multiple proteins that play central roles in cellular signaling, an important area of discovery and disease research.

Cell Signaling Technology’s expertise and market leadership in antibodies for detecting protein phosphorylation and other regulatory protein modifications is a prominent focus of the collaboration. Bio-Rad will use antibodies developed by CST to develop multiplex assays that permit the simultaneous measurement of phosphorylated proteins in parallel signaling pathways and enable understanding how protein phosphorylation is regulated. Abnormalities in these signaling mechanisms underlie many diseases, most notably cancers, cardiovascular disorders, and metabolic and inflammatory diseases.

“Our expertise in antibody development and Bio-Rad’s expertise in bead-based assay development will create very high value assays that have the precision and rigor to enable multiplex analysis of signal transduction pathways” said Michael Melnick, CST’s Vice President of Business and Corporate Development. “These assays will enable investigators to elucidate the functions of signaling proteins and pathways within the context of systems biology.

“Advances in cellular signaling research will have a great impact both in our understanding of fundamental biological processes and in advancing the treatment of disease. We chose CST, the market leader in development of activation-state antibodies for signal transduction research, to expedite bringing a broader array of tools to this important research field,” added Norman Schwartz, Bio-Rad Laboratories’ President.

Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. (www.bio-rad.com) is a multinational manufacturer and distributor of life science research products and clinical diagnostics. It is based in Hercules, CA, and serves research and industry customers worldwide.
