FABP4 Antibody #2120

Applications Reactivity Sensitivity MW (kDa) Source
W M Endogenous 15 Rabbit

Applications Key:  W=Western Blotting
Reactivity Key:  M=Mouse
Species cross-reactivity is determined by Western blot.

Specificity / Sensitivity

FABP4 Antibody detects endogenous levels of total FABP4 protein.

Source / Purification

Polyclonal antibodies are produced by immunizing rabbits with a synthetic peptide (KLH-coupled) derived from the sequence of mouse FABP4. Antibodies are purified by peptide affinity chromatography.

Western Blotting

Western Blotting

Western blot analysis of extracts from NIH/3T3 and 3T3-L1 cells using FABP4 Antibody.

Background

Fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) bind to fatty acids and other lipids and function as cytoplasmic lipid chaperones (1). They participate in the transport of fatty acids and other lipids to various cellular pathways (2). In adipocytes, the predominant form of fatty acid binding proteins is FABP4, which is also called adipocyte fatty acid binding protein (AP2). Fed on high-fat and high-calorie diet, FABP4 knockout mice develop obesity but do not become insulin resistant or diabetic, suggesting that this protein might be a link between obesity and insulin resistance and diabetes (3). FABP4 is also expressed in macrophages (4). Mice deficient in both FABP4 and ApoE show protection against atherosclerosis when compared with the mice deficient only in ApoE (4). Studies identified a genetic variant at the FABP4 locus which results in the reduction of FABP4 expression. The individuals carrying this genetic variant show dramatic decrease in the risk for type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease (1).
