Background

CD13 (aminopeptidase N) belongs to a family of exoenzymes and other members that include aminopeptidase A, neprilysin and dipeptidylpeptidase IV (1). CD13 is a transmembrane type II molecule and functions as a metallo-peptidase requiring zinc. Some identified substrates of CD13 are angiotensin I, II and III, met-enkephalin, MCP-1 and MIP-1 (2). Most cells of myeloid origin express CD13 including monocytes, neutrophils, T lymphocytes and bone marrow stroma cells (2). CD13 may influence vascular permeability, cell migration and invasion through its proteolytic capacity. Because CD13 is overexpressed in tumor cells, it has caused an interest in developing noncytotoxic inhibitors (2-3).
