Laboratories are among the most energy and natural resource intensive buildings on the planet. In some cases, laboratories use up to five times the amount of energy and natural resources per square foot than a normal office building would use. In an effort to improve our commitments to energy savings, we’ve set a target of reducing our energy consumption by 15% by 2025. Under this goal, we are focusing on replacing inefficient equipment, retrofitting our facilities, and looking towards alternative energy. We’ve already replaced some of our ultra-low temperature freezers with more efficient models from Stirling. Our Facilities department have installed variable frequency drives (VFDs) in water pumps and heating modules that modulate electrical use based on demand. With CST’s new energy goal, we are excited to share news of our 2017 installation of LED lighting at our Beverly Facility, and bringing 254,322 kWh of solar power online through rooftop PV installations that went live in January 2018.
