    Background

Layilin (LAYN) is a single-pass type I integral membrane protein widely expressed by different cell types and tissues (1). LAYN is a hyaluronan receptor that directly interacts with several cytoskeletal-membrane linker molecules, including talin, merlin, and radixin (1-3). In both tumor and immune cell types, LAYN plays an important role in cell adhesion and motility, promoting cell spreading, migration, and infiltration (1,4-7). LAYN is involved in the tumor necrosis factor-α induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition of renal tubular epithelial cells (8), and also plays a critical role in HA35-induced intestinal epithelial tight junctions in inflammatory bowel disease (9). Lineage-specific deletion of LAYN on murine CD8+ T cells reduced their accumulation in tumors and increased tumor growth in vivo (10). Multiple isoforms have been identified.
