Target Information
a receptor for a subset of human corona viruses; an exo-carboxypeptidase that converts angiotensin II to angiotensin 1-7, a vasodilator, and angiotensin I to angiotensin 1-9, a peptide of unknown function. Also able to hydrolyze apelin-13 and dynorphin-13 with high efficiency. May be an important regulator of heart function. Plays an important role in amino acid transport by acting as binding partner of amino acid transporter SL6A19 in intestine, regulating trafficking, expression on the cell surface, and its catalytic activity. A receptor for the SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19. A receptor for Human coronavirus NL63/HCoV-NL63. Both SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 use ACE2 to enter cells. Both viruses bind ACE2 with similar affinities. Antibodies against SARS-CoV S (spike protein) potently inhibit SARS-CoV-2 S mediated entry into cells, indicating that coronavirus spike proteins contain conserved epitopes capable of eliciting cross-neutralizing antibodies. Belongs to the peptidase M2 family. Expressed in endothelial cells from small and large arteries, and in arterial smooth muscle cells. Expressed in lung alveolar epithelial cells, enterocytes of the small intestine, Leydig cells and Sertoli cells (at protein level). Expressed in heart, kidney, testis, and gastrointestinal system. 2 alternatively spliced human isoforms have been reported. Note: This description may include information from UniProtKB.
