    Background

    Ubiquinol-cytochrome-c reductase complex core protein 1 (UQCRC1), also known as cytochrome b-c1 complex subunit 1, is a subunit of the ubiquinol-cytochrome c oxidoreductase complex (Complex III) in the mitochondrial electron transport chain. UQCRC1 and UQCRC2 are crucial in complex III dimerization during the early phase of the complex assembly (1,2). Studies reveal a significant reduction of UQCRC1 protein levels in hippocampal tissues from Alzheimer's disease patients and APP/PS1 transgenic mice (3). In addition, downregulation of UQCRC1 expression was shown to damage hippocampus-dependent cognition in mice (4).
