    Background

Prolactin (PRL) is a polypeptide hormone generated and secreted by lactotrophic cells of the anterior pituitary gland (1). The hormone's main function is to promote lactation in response to the suckling reflex. It is involved in many other biological processes, including reproduction, metabolism, autoimmunity, diabetes, and cancer development (2-7). The major isoform, 23 kDa prolactin, acts via binding to its membrane receptor, the prolactin receptor (PRLR). PRLR is a member of the hematopoietic cytokine superfamily and its activation mechanism has been linked to the Jak2 pathway (8).
